My ‘54 MG doesn’t have syncros in 1st either. Fortunately it’s geared so low it doesn’t need 1st unless you fully stop anyway.

Also, just for kicks - I once had a ‘72 MBG that would regularly lose the hydraulic clutch. I had to learn to shift by rev matching each gear. If I needed to stop I had to put in Neutral, shut the engine off, put it in 1st gear and then get the car rolling with the starter motor.

Yeah I had a subaru that had the clutch cable go out twice and ended up doing the same thing. It’s pretty easy once you get a feel for it.

It makes you feel like a god of driving though - except for the couple of times I would forget to take it out of 1st before I came to a complete stop and it started bucking and threatening to rearend the guy in front of me and I had to shut the key off to stop in time! Close call more than once!

Even if someone takes exception to what you say, why do they have to be mean about it? Did your comment insult them personally in some way? And if they honestly think you are full of shit, then why not just not comment? I never understand the people who need to denigrate other posters just to make themselve feel superior. They don't even realize how it backfires on them most of the time.

I drive a 67 Series IIa in traffic which 1st and 2nd are crash gears, it isn’t a big deal. Dude needs to get over himself.

The synchro is probably worn out. A common issue for that era of Subarus. The 1st gear synchro has to work more than those on other gears to get the gearset spinning fast when people downshift, so it usually wears out first.

I never had the car from new and it doesn't bother me. First is pretty short and if I do have to downshift to first it's just some double clutching.

I find this is true of all cars. Someone buys the car, uses the synchro on first as much as they like because they can, it wears out and becomes near useless and they stop doing it.

I was joking. Mine was an 02, and had to be asked very nicely to engage first because the synchros are notoriously weak.
